HHS Boys Varsity vs Fall Mtn, Sept 5

The Hanover varsity improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 9-0 victory against a young Fall Mountain team. What a difference a year makes! The last time these two teams met in the NHIAA quarterfinals last October, the Marauders had to fight for their lives before a Jeff Levin goal in the dying minutes of the match game Hanover a 3-2 victory. Since then, Fall Mountain graduated 16 seniors and is in serious rebuilding mode, and the Marauders appear ready to make another postseason run.

Ben Rimmer opened the scoring in the fourth minute, knocking in the rebound of a Henry Caldwell shot. Yosef Osheyack upped the score to 2-0 nine minutes later, converting a sick assist from Aussie Cyrus for his second goal of the season. Matt Wetherell ventured into the box and headed in his third goal on a corner kick from Lou Gemunden, who had also assisted on Wetherell's other two goals. Twenty seconds later, Henry Caldwell knocked in his first career goal to make the score 4-0 after 24 minutes. Coach Grabill cleared the bench at this point, and there was no more scoring before the break.

It took the Marauders less than two minutes to get on the board in the second half, with Ben Rimmer passing up an easy scoring opportunity to feed Eric Barthold for a far post tap-in, giving the senior midfielder his third goal in three games. Two minutes later Barthold notched the first of his two helpers on the day, lofting a cross for Henry Caldwell to head home. Every starter made for the bench at the game's 45 minute mark, but the Hanover reserves continued the onslaught. First up was Paul Burchard, playing in his first game of the season (and his career) after rehabbing a broken foot for more than half a year. The senior midfielder hit a 20 yard screamer into the upper ninety
to announce his return. Two other seniors also made their debuts, each following preseason injuries. Dylan Riessen and Erik Barth both played with panache, and showed that they wil be contending for playing time as the season progresses. The final two goals of the match were tallied by Eric Jayne, who has made the most of his playing time in the early season. The Marauders' only freshman settled a cross from Caldwell
and hit a ripper for his second career goal, and then tipped in a pass from Barthold, who took over the team scoring lead with his fourth assist on the season.

Sam Gest recorded a nice save on Fall Mountain's only shot of the game to preserve Hanover's third shutout of the season.

Next up of rhte Marauders is a home match on Saturday against an improved Milford team. The Spartans are 3-1, and have outscored their opponents 29-5. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.

HHS Boy Soccer Community Service Opportunity

From HHS Boys Soccer Head Coach Rob Grabill regarding Crop Walk 2007 on Sunday October 7 in Lebanon

Dear Parents and Players -

I have invited all members of the Hanover High boys soccer teams to participate in a public service opportunity to raise money for the CROP hunger walk. Since the late 60s, CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) walks have raised millions of dollars to fight hunger globally and locally. Last year more than 20 members of the varsity and junior varsity teams helped the Upper Valley CROP walkers raises more than $16,000. Up to a quarter of this money went to local agencies such as LISTEN.

CROP Walk volunteers receive pledge envelopes, and are asked to solicit pledges and donations from as many donors as possible prior to the event. They then participate in a three-mile walk in and around downtown Lebanon on Sunday afternoon, and join afterwards for refreshments and celebration. Despite the pouring rain last year (which helped us feel very noble) the team had a great time, and as a group raised neaqrly $3,000 a significant part of the total. Our goal this year is to double both our participation and our donation. With the help of all four teams, we can easily do this.

This is totally a voluntary activity. No player should feel any pressure to participate. We recognize that the time commitment of the season makes time off on weekends a valuable commodity. On the other hand, this busy schedule also limits us from participating in other community service activities, such as Youth in Action, and this is a great way to show that we care about more than soccer. We have always felt that being aware of our responsibility to the community and the world as a whole is a vital part of the HHS experience.

We have begun distributing pledge packets to players who volunteer, and wwelcome parents and family members to join us in this endeavor. If you have questions or need further information, please feel free to contact me.

Varsity Week One Recap

HANOVER OPENS WITH TWO WINS

The Hanover High Scool boys soccer team opened its Class I title defense with a pair of easy wins on the road. The Marauders defeated a young Bedford side 5-0 and then travelled to Conway last Saturday and picked up a 4-0 victory over Kennett.

The Bedford game pitted an experienced Hanover squad against a team composed entirely of sophomores and freshmen, and the result was never in doubt after goals by Seniors Eric Barthold and Casey Maue in the first seven minutes have the Marauders a 2-0 lead. Most of the starters were on the bench after the 25-minute mark, but center back Matt Wetherell took advantage of his presence with two first half scores, both assisted by junior midfielder Lou Gemunden. Wetherell headed home a Gemunden corner kick, and then volleyed home a long cross to give Hanover a 4-0 halftime advantage.

The second half lasted only twenty minutes after the lights at the new Bedford field went out and could not be turned back on, but with Hanover owning a 20-0 shot advantage, the result was a forgone conclusion. Freshman Eric Jayne took advantage of his playing time to notch his first career goal for the only score of the half, assisted by Oliver Horton, a first-year varsity player.
Ben Harwick and Sam Gest shared time the goal for the Marauders and got credit for the shutout.

Kennett offered a good deal more resistance, and it took Hanover most of the first half to gert on the scoreboard after a number of near misses. Senior Captain Angus Kennedy threaded a perfect through pass to classmate Aussie Cyrus, and the fleet midfielder converted a clean breakaway past Eagle goalie Sam Burroughs. Leading 1-0 with less than a minute to play in the half, the Marauders grabbed a second goal when they were awarded an indirect kick just inside the Kennett penalty area. Eric Barthold tapped the ball to Kennedy, whose well-delivered free kick eluded both the Eagle defensive wall and Burroughs for a 2-0 Hanover lead.

Hanover stepped up the pressure in the second half and doubled the lead thanks to Barthold and Junior striker Yosef Osheyack, who each assisated the other's goal. Barthold struck first, knocking in the rebound of a hard shot by Osheyack, who has worked free on the right side. Minutes later, Barthold hit a long cross from the far left-hand corner that cleared the reach of Burroughs and conencted with Osheyack at the far post for an easy header. Rhys Cyrus made one challenging save in the Hanover goal to earn his shutout.

The road will get rougher for Hanover in the next several games. After this Wednesday's home opener with Fall Mountain, the Marauders host a Saturday showdown with Milford, which has opened the season with a 3-0 record, outscoring their opponents 29-0 in the process. Perennial Class I contender Con-Val visits next Tuesday, and then Hanover travels to Oyster River a week from Saturday to help the oldest franchise in NH High School soccer celebrate the 50th year of the sport in the state.

Directions to Kennett HS, North Conway, NH, Sat Sept 1

Kennett has a brand new high school, however, the games are being played at the old high school.

There are many ways to go, here are three ways:

Route 10 North to 25A in Orford, right onto 25A.
Stay on 25A until Wentworth then left onto route 118 towards Warren. Continue
on 118 past Warren towards N. Woodstock, 118 will merge with/become route 112
just before Lincoln. Continue on 112 (Kancamagus HWY) until it intersects with
route 16 in Conway. Turn left onto 16 north, the school is about 1/4 mile up on
the left.

Another way to do it is to approach from Exit 17 on I-89 and take route 4
through Enfield and Canaan to Rte. 118. Go left onto 118 until it intersects
with 25/3A/Tenney Mtn. Hwy where you will go right and follow signs to Plymouth
and I-93. Take 93 North to Exit 32 and go east on 112/Kancamagus Hwy as above.

Yet another way (this is the way the basketball bus went last year) is to take
Exit 17 on
I-89 and continue on route 4 through Enfield and Canaan. In Danbury, take a
left onto Route 104 through Bristol and New Hampton to the intersection of route
3. Take route 3 north to Meredith and take a right onto route 25 east to W.
Ossippee. Turn left at the lights in W. Ossippee onto route 16 north. Continue
for about 20 miles. After the first set of lights in Conway, the school is
about 1/4 mile on your left.
